Buying An Approved Used Kitchen

How do I know the kitchen will be in good condition? What does Approved Used mean?

The term ‘Approved Used’ is our seal of approval. Unlike other second-hand online sales sites, we make it as easy and risk-free as possible to buy through us. Each used kitchen we sell is inspected in person by a member of our team. We do not accept a kitchen if it doesn’t meet our stringent criteria – in fact, we reject more kitchens than we accept.

Each approved used kitchen is listed on our site with an honest reflection of the kitchen’s condition at the time of our marketing survey. Where possible, we will let you know the original fit price, age and any minor wear or damage (normally commensurate with age) that has been noted. This can be found on each approved used kitchen listing.

All our approved used kitchens are graded: very good, good or fair (again, commensurate with age) – we will never claim a kitchen is in excellent condition because, by nature, it has been pre-installed/used.

Please note, all appliances are certified as working on the day of our marketing visit and are not subject to testing.

I want to buy a kitchen, but how do I know it will fit?

Most kitchen units are built to standard modular sizes, each of our listings provide a full breakdown of all the unit sizes in addition to the approximate overall current dimensions – helping you to make an informed decision.

In the case of a UKE Approved Used Kitchen, we always suggest you have a layout drawn up for your new kitchen and use that as a template – you should aim to purchase a used kitchen 10% to 20% larger than you need to give you a variety of layout options.

Using the list of cabinets on our sales listing, you can move the units into the places that fit with your kitchen plan. There are many readily available design packages online that are easy to use and will help you choose your preferred layout.

Let your creativity flow! If you want an island, make your own using any leftover units. To create the perfect island space – the only purchases you would need to make are end panels, a back panel and worktop. Why stop there? Design a matching utility room or even an organised storage area in your garage – the only limit is your imagination.

Can I view a kitchen before I buy?

In almost every case we are able to arrange a viewing for you. With an approved used kitchen, this will be at the home of the seller. If a kitchen has already been removed and is in storage, this information will be in the description of the kitchen’s listing.

As a buyer, do I have to pay to have the kitchen dismantled?

No, professional dismantle cost is included in the listing price. All of our private sellers are offered our Which? Trusted Trader dismantle service. Please check the listing to see who will be removing the kitchen, or contact us for further information.

As a buyer, will I be expected to pay VAT in addition to the sales price?

No, approved used kitchens are not subject to VAT.

How and when do I pay for my kitchen?

All of our kitchens can be secured with a minimum deposit of 10%. This means they are effectively sold on a buy now pay later basis, with the full balance due 14 days before collection or delivery.

Do you offer finance? Can I pay by credit card?

We understand buying a kitchen is an investment. Yes we do offer payment by credit card and we are the only used kitchen provider to offer a range of FCA approved finance options. Click here to browse our variety of finance packages.

Do you offer a collection and delivery service?

Yes, we do and we’d be delighted to collect and deliver your kitchen. So, why choose our service?

When installing a new kitchen, it is often delivered to the property in stages: the cabinets will arrive first, then the appliances and finally, the worktops. An approved used kitchen is different, it will be delivered in its entirety. This means delivery is one of your most important considerations.

Our in-house team are specialists in collecting and delivering a used kitchen. We provide the correct insurance, appropriate lifting equipment and specialist vans at the correct height, weight tolerance and racking to transport your kitchen and worktops safely.

The average kitchen with stone worktops can weigh in excess of 1 tonne so using a ‘man with a van’ is not advised. Not only are they unlikely to be experienced in protecting your kitchen whilst on the move, the majority of couriers only have insurance for goods in transit. This means most couriers are not insured while outside their van as kitchen collection and delivery is not their primary business.

Your kitchen really is in safe hands – often it will be the same team who dismantle and deliver your kitchen, so you will be shown an itemized collection report on arrival to prove that all elements of your kitchen have been inspected and accounted for.

Once you have found your next kitchen, please contact us to request a quote.

Can I collect the kitchen myself?

Yes. Although we would strongly advise against self-collection, if you are experienced and able to do this yourself then we are happy to help you plan your collection. All buyers can request the weight and dimensions of the kitchen they have purchased. In addition, we can provide advice on manpower requirements and access issues for the collection point.

If you choose self-collection, or employ your own courier, we strongly advise that you fully inspect the kitchen’s condition and completeness against our listing prior to loading as it is very difficult to rectify any problems once a kitchen has been collected.

If you choose our inhouse service, then this will automatically be done on your behalf.

Buying An Ex Display Kitchen

How do I know the kitchen will be in good condition?

Used Kitchen Exchange advertise Ex Display kitchens on behalf of premier showrooms across the UK. In most cases we will have visited the showroom to take photographs, however it is the showroom who provide the product details and measurements. This means it is also the showrooms responsibility to note any wear and tear, or damage.

I want to buy an Ex display kitchen, but how do I know it will fit?

Ex-display kitchens are a little easier than approved used kitchens as they have normally been designed and fitted without the need to accommodate household architecture such as service pillars, arches, windows, etc. It is best that an ex-display kitchen more or less fits your current space. This is the best way to gain the most from the savings made, however, most displays are current stock and can be added to and in some cases the showroom may be able to offer a design service for their buyer.

Our ex display kitchens are available at such great prices, compared to new, that it is definitely worth coming out of your comfort zone a little.

Can I view a kitchen before I buy?

Yes, in almost every case a viewing can be arranged for you, we have even arranged facetime calls for people who are unable to travel.

As the buyer, do I have to pay to have the kitchen dismantled?

No, in all cases the kitchen will be professionally removed for you and the cost of this is included in the price you pay.

Will I be expected to pay VAT in addition to the sales price?

No, all sales prices are inclusive of VAT (if applicable). If you require a VAT invoice, please make this known to us before you pay your deposit so we can check if one is available from the showroom.

How and when do I pay for my kitchen?

All of our kitchens can be secured with a minimum deposit of 10%. This means they are effectively sold on a buy now pay later basis, with the full balance due 14 days before collection or delivery.

How long will it take to sell my kitchen?

This is a common question and one that is difficult to define – put simply, the second-hand market is seasonal and is also dependant on how many other kitchens are available that are similar to yours.

Ideally, 6-8 weeks before your kitchen is removed is an optimal amount of time for us to guide you through our approval process and actively market your kitchen to find a buyer. We sell over 99% of the kitchens we list – this is because we only accept kitchens that we are confident will sell. As a result, our success rate is high.

Will I have to arrange the dismantle of my kitchen?

Making the right decisions with regards to the dismantle of your kitchen is important for you and your buyer. Your buyer will need reassurance that the job will be professionally done (minimising the risk of damage) and as the seller, you’ll feel the same way and may even worry about the safety of your home! Kitchen dismantle is a specialist skill and this is why it is an integral part of our approved used kitchen validation process.

You must consider…

  • Would your buyer pay the asking price knowing that they had the cost and risk of removal to factor in?
  • Would your buyer be happy if they were asked to arrange the removal of the kitchen?
  • Would you be happy with unqualified or uninsured tradesmen in your home?

We know you wouldn’t, so by selling only approved used kitchens, we are protecting both sellers and buyers and this is why we’re the UK’s most successful kitchen reseller.

Used Kitchen Exchange’s Which? Trusted Trader Dismantle Service

which trusted trader logo vectorYour kitchen was installed using a number of different trades: kitchen fitters, joiners, plumbers, electricians and worktop fabricators. It’s likely your kitchen would have taken days to install. This is why, unless you decide otherwise, your kitchen will be professionally removed by our Which? Trusted Trader removal service.

We are proud to say that our dismantle service is accredited as a Which? Trusted Trader*. Our team is highly skilled, removing your kitchen using proven techniques to minimise the risk of damage and protect your home. In fact, the only thing that you need to do is ensure you have made the necessary arrangements to disconnect your gas and electric – we will do the rest.

There is a cost involved, however this is often similar to the cost of destruction and taking it to landfill – around £650+ VAT* for the average kitchen.

By agreeing for us to dismantle your kitchen, your sales listing will proudly display our Which? Trusted Trader badge. From experience, we know that this means buyers are more likely to choose your kitchens above others that don’t secure our dismantle service.

*What if something goes wrong with the dismantle of my kitchen?

We always endeavour to provide the best service and products for our customers. However, on rare occasions, we recognise that there may be times where our customers may not be completely satisfied.

To ensure we are able to put things rights as soon as we can, please read our complaints procedure and we will respond promptly to ensure complete satisfaction.

As soon as possible after the completion of the dismantle works, please inspect your kitchen to ensure everything has been carried out to our usual high standards.

In the unlikely event there is anything you are not completely satisfied with, please contact us as soon as you can in order that we can rectify any problems as soon as possible.

Where we cannot resolve any complaints using our own complaints procedure, as a Which? Trusted Trader we use the Dispute Resolution Ombudsman for dispute resolution. In the unlikely event of a complaint arising and you wish to refer the complaint to them please contact us on 0117 981 2929 or via their website http://www.disputeresolutionombudsman.org/which-trusted-traders-partnership/

How do you value my kitchen?

With many years of experience in the kitchen industry, it is possible for us to give you an estimated resale price for your kitchen, based on previous sales, once a member of our team has conducted a marketing survey of your kitchen.

This price will be based on a number of considerations: size, age, condition, demand, time until dismantle and original purchase price (if known). We suggest that the sales price will fall very close to our estimate, but it is impossible to give a guaranteed sales price.

Sometimes it may be necessary to accept a lower price. Some buyers may not be able to reuse all elements of your kitchen and may need to replace or source further items, this can reduce the price a buyer is willing to pay. We will never insist that you refuse a lower offer, if you would prefer the comfort of a quick sale. We are happy to discuss the pricing of your kitchen with you, agree a minimum sales value you or offer advice on the best approach.

Do you sell a lot of kitchens?

Yes, we do! We’re proud to say that we sell upwards of 100 kitchens, each month.

With years of experience in the kitchen market, we have learnt that selling a pre-installed kitchen is as much about the buying experience as the product itself. The majority of buyers will need extra reassurance to feel comfortable that their purchase is safe, measurements are correct and the kitchen is as described. Our unique approval service gives our buyers this confidence and this is why we are head and shoulders above the rest in our marketplace.
